Year One DASGS keep hold of SVGCC track and field title

Year One Division of Arts, Sciences and General Studies (DASGS) remained champions of the 2018 QuickCash Corp National Lotteries Authority SVG Community College track and field championships, when the finals took place last Friday at the Arnos Vale Playing Field.

Year One DASGS amassed 304 points, Year Two DASGS were second, on 224 points.

Placing third were the Division of Teacher Education, which compiled 131 points.

Shantel Williams of Year Two DASGS copped the female champion award.

Williams’ 42 points put her ahead of her teammate Darria Matthias, who scored 30 points.

Taking the male champion award was Najima Burgin of Year Two DASGS, who tallied 23 points, while Yonick Murray, of Year One DASGS, placed second with 20 points.

Records

Twelve records, six in the Female Division and six in the Male Division, were established at last Friday’s meet.

In the Female Division, Darria Matthias eclipsed the old 200m mark of 25.34 seconds with a time of 25.33 seconds. Matthias also set a new 60m record, with a time of 7.79 seconds. The previous record stood at 7.90 seconds.

Tamara Woodley’s time of 59.49 seconds in the 400m bettered the previous 1:03.93.44.

Woodley also smashed the 800m record, which she lowered from 2:37.31, to 2:36.38.

Shantel Williams’ effort of 4.78m in the long jump reset the 4.75m set in 2016.

And, in the high jump, Angel Woods’ 1.40m, bettered the previous best of 1.30m.

Meanwhile, in the Male Division, Yonick Murray broke the 200m and 400m records, by clocking 22.17 seconds and 49.85 seconds, respectively.

Murray eclipsed the previous marks of 22.53 and 50.66.

Also, Lemus Christopher upped the high jump record to 1.90m, from the 1.85m.

Adding his name to the list of record-breakers was Tarique Compton, who stretched the distance in the shot put from 11.52m to 12.56m.

The two relay records were also reset.

Year One DASGS set a new time of 3:33.57 in the 4x400m. Before, the record stood at 3:36.24.

And, Year Two DASGS sped to 44.34 seconds in the 4 x100m, faster than the 45.02 seconds that stood as the record for the event.
