Vincentian cricketers remember Nick Elibox

Two Vincentian cricketers who have played alongside and against St Lucian Nick Elibox, have expressed sadness at his passing.

 Vincent Cupid, a former SVG Under-15 and Under-19 cricketer, who also played for the Windwards at the Under-15 and Under-17 levels, said that he was shocked on hearing of Elibox’s tragic death.

 “I was playing last Sunday for Combined Youths and when I came off the field and picked up Wifi, I got a message from Samuel Holder, who managed us at the Windwards level, of Nick’s death… It killed my spirit immediately, that I did not function well when I went back on the field,” Cupid said.

 Cupid remembers Elibox as a “cool person who will always be in his room, but although he was quiet, he was friendly when you got to know him and liked making a lot of jokes”.

 “He was known for hitting big sixes,” Cupid recalled.

 Cupid noted that Elibox would always look out for him, whenever he visited St Lucia and the compliment would be returned when Elibox came to St Vincent and the Grenadines.

 Elibox was part of the St Lucia Under-19 outfit that played here in St Vincent and the Grenadines in the Windwards tournament in 2016.

 Meanwhile, Jeremy Layne, who captained the SVG Under-19 team in the Windwards tournament last year in St Lucia, remembered Elibox, “as a really, really cool guy”.

Layne, unlike Cupid, was never a teammate of Elibox, but recalled both playing against each other at the Windwards Under-15 level as well.

Reports from St Lucia say that Elibox died in a vehicular accident in La Retraite, Monchy, Gros Islet, early Sunday morning.

 Elibox, 19, was said to have been driving his grey Suzuki Vitara and lost control of the vehicle, which ran off the road and overturned around 2 a.m.

Elibox is said to have suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead.

Four other persons in the vehicle sustained minor injuries.

Elibox, a Castries Comprehensive Secondary School alumnus, was on a cricket scholarship at Woodhouse Grove in England in 2015 and played for Windwards Under-17.

 He is the second promising sportsman who has died in a vehicular accident for the year.

Bradley Cyril, 19, of Beausejour, Gros Islet, a national football representative and track and field athlete, died on January 20, when the motor car he was travelling in veered off the road and ran into a wall on the Vide Bouteille Highway.
