Former champions knocked out of Greiggs Softball Cricket Competition

When the round of 16 of the St Vincent Brewery/ FLOW, Sea Operations Nar Fren Dem Greiggs T/20 Softball Cricket Competition commenced last weekend at the Greiggs Central Playing Field, one former champion, CGM Gallagher Novice, packed it in until 2018.

Once a powerhouse in local softball cricket, Novice were handed a four-wicket defeat by emerging force Sion Hill Tallawahs, on Sunday.

Novice limped to 88 for 9 from their 20 overs, with Casmond Walters making 26.

Leading Sion Hill Tallawahs’ bowling was Shamic Roberts, who grabbed 3 for 23.

Roberts then struck 34, to pilot his team to 89 for 6 in 17.4 overs. Zane Edwards took 2 for 8, bowling for Novice.

Also making it to the last eight were Country Meet Town Outa Trouble Family, Dr Thomas Injectors, and Street Fighters.

First to notch up a win was Outa Trouble Family on Saturday, defeating Shop For Less Clinchers Two, on a faster scoring rate,

Batting first, Clinchers Two were dismissed for 58 off 17.5 overs.

Doing the damage with the ball for Outa Trouble Family were Wesrick Straugh, who snared 3 for 4 and Deroy Straugh, who took 3 for 12.

Outa Trouble Family was 52 for 2 from 8 overs when rained halted the match, but they were ahead of the asking rate at that juncture. Asif Hopper helped his team’s cause, making 24.

Joining Outa Trouble Family was Dr Thomas Injectors, who had a three-wicket win over Shop For Less Clinchers Two in Sunday’s first fixture.

Reduced to 17 overs per team, occasioned by a late start, Clinchers One compiled a respectable 148 from 7 from their 17 overs. Leading the way was Okeiph Andrews, who stroked 65 not out.

Javon Lavia picked off 2 for 30 and Desroy Lavia had 2 for 43, bowling for Dr Thomas Injectors.

But it was Kezron Ashton’s knock of 91 not out, that guided Dr Thomas Ashton over the line at 149 for 7 from 14.1 overs.

Bowling for Clinchers One, Donaldson Harry took 2 for 35 and Peter Richards, 2 for 40.

Sunday’s second match, between Street Fighters and Caesar’s Defenders, was also reduced to 17 overs.

Street Fighters’ score of 75 all out in 16.4 overs was considered modest by their standard, as their batting was undone by the bowling of Imron Samuel, who snared 3 for 21.

But Caesar’s Defenders’ defence was worse, as they were shackled at 72 for 6 in their 17 overs. Othneil Lewis was their main stay with 21.

And, bowling for Street Fighters, Antonio Barker picked up 2 for 8.
