Schools’ Table Tennis Championships underway

The 2017 Schools’ Table Tennis championships are progressing, despite a reduction in the number of teams that originally indicated their participation.

Amidst the falling outs, defending champions of the male segment of the secondary schools’ bracket, the St Vincent Grammar School, has thus far notched up two wins, dismissing the Georgetown Secondary School and Bequia Community High, by 3-0 margins.   

Versus the Georgetown Secondary, Akeil De Roche beat Omarian Samuel 11-6, 11-3; Juwan Howard whipped Jammar Cropper 11-8, 11-7; and Dureese Nelson had the better of Urnel Thomas 12-10, 11-3. 

In the Grammar School’s win over the Bequia Community High School, Caleb Howard ousted Rodine Hazell 11-3, 11-4, while Michel Creese defeated Augustine Pollard 8-11, 11-5, 11-6 and Joshua Joseph beat Giovanni Lewis 11-2, 11-4.                             

Georgetown Secondary School bounced back to edge out New Adelphi Secondary School 3 games to 2.

Georgetown’s triumphs came from Omarion Samuel, who had an 11-8, 11-6 win at the expense of Jason Hunt and bettered Jamai Williams 11-8, 1-11, 11-8, while Jammar Cropper squeezed out Elron Baptiste 11-6, 8-11, 11-8.

New Adelphi’s two games were secured by Jamai Williams, who beat Irvin Warrican Jr 11-8, 11-6 and Jason Hunt, who stopped Warrican Jr 11-4, 11-9.

Also claiming wins were the Union Island Secondary and the Bequia Seventh-Day Adventist.

Union Island had a 3-1 win over Troumaca Ontario Secondary.

Rokenzie Bute beat Kirtney Franklyn 11-5, 12-10 and Reshawn Lewis 11-3, 10-12, 11-4, while Jeremy Jones defeated Jessiem Edwards 11-5, 11-3, to account for Union Island Secondary’s wins.

Reshawn Lewis came back to beat Shad Thomas 5-11, 11-5, 11-5, in Troumaca Ontario Secondary’s lone triumph.

Union Island also saw off the West St George Secondary, 3-2.

Bute led Jethro Saxon 13-11, 14-12 and Bennis Waldron 12-10, 7-11, 11-9 and Thomas ousted Jolanzo Patterson 11-7, 11-5.

For West St George Secondary, Saxon stopped Nicholas Mayers 12-10, 11-7 and Waldron had a 14-12, 11-7 win over Mayers.

And, the Bequia Seventh-Day Adventist left the Thomas Saunders Secondary empty handed, beating them 3-0.

Jovin Derrick beat Daniel Anthony 11-2, 11-4; Reon Ollivierre whipped Akiva Franklyn 11-9, 11-8 and Jonelson Compton beat Rasheed Wallace 9-11, 11-4, 11-6.  

In the Primary Schools’ segment, the Brighton Government School defeated the Gomea Methodist School 3-1.

Setting up Brighton Methodist School’s win were Sarah Thomas, who beat Jaydira Greaves 11-1, 11-6 and Valise Adams, who beat Jaheisha Timm 11-0, 11-5 and Greaves 11-5, 11-1.

Latisha George of Gomea Methodist School won her match by default, as Brighton Methodist was unable to field a third player.
