Four new champs in Round D Town Road Relay

Four new winners emerged when Team Athletics SVG staged its annual Round D Town Road Relay, last Sunday in the capital, Kingstown.

The Kingstown Preparatory School (KPS) had double champions in the primary schools’ segment, copping both the male and female divisions.

The male team of the KPS clocked a time of 29 minutes 02.84 seconds, while the females’ winning time was 35 minutes 51.90 seconds.

The Sandy Bay Primary were second to the KPS in both categories, with another Sandy Bay Primary outfit docking in third in the male division.

For winning both categories, the KPS earned $300 each, while Sandy Bay collected $ 200 each for the two second places and $150 for their third place.

Last year’s double winners of the primary category were Fitz-Hughes Government, who did not contest last Sunday’s race.

Joining the KPS as new winners were the St Vincent Grammar School and the Central Leeward Secondary, which won the male secondary and open female, respectively.

The St Vincent Grammar School’s winning time of 30 minutes 45.60 seconds, earned them a purse of $400; the Central Leeward Secondary School female team, who opted to run in the open category,  won in a time, of 37 minutes 44.62 seconds, to pocket $600.

Second to the St Vincent Grammar School was Sandy Bay Secondary and third – Petit Bordel Secondary, receiving $300 and $200, respectively.

Trailing the Central Leeward Secondary in the open female was IT-DAT Academy team one and team two, in that order. IT-DAT Academy pouched a combined earnings of $500, for the second and third places.

Retaining titles were the Central Leeward Secondary – the female secondary schools’ class and the IT- DAT Academy – the open male.

Central Leeward Secondary School retained the female category, clocking a time of 41 minutes 04.72 seconds, while IT- DAT Academy’s winning time in the open male was 27 minutes 45.52 seconds.

Second in the secondary schools’ female was the Thomas Saunders Secondary and third, Petit Bordel.

Taking the second spot in the open male was IT- DAT Academy team two and third was X-Cel.

The distribution of the prize monies was the same order as the secondary males and the open females.

Sunday’s event, which started off Team Athletics’ 2017 road racing calendar, saw the beginning and ending of each leg, directly in front of First Caribbean International Bank on Halifax Street.

From the start point, athletes headed up to Sharpe Street then onto Bay Street, with the primary school participants turning on Higginson Street and the others to Linley Street, on to Back Street, to the starting point.

Thirty–seven teams, 27 more than last year’s tally, participated in last Sunday’s race.(RT)
