Breakaway Masters recognizes two former national goalkeepers

The Breakaway Masters Organization, at the opening of the 2017 Digicel/Aeropost/St Vincent Brewery Firms Invitational Football competition, held at the Grammar School Playing Field, recognized two former national goalkeepers.

The honourees were Thaddeus Michael Findlay and Ali Munro, who were recognized for their contributions to sports in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Findlay, regarded as one of the best goalkeepers St Vincent and the Grenadines has ever produced, served on the senior national team from 1962 to 1968.

Findlay played for local football clubs Honveds and Saints.

But it was his cricket skills with which Findlay had become more accomplished, representing St Vincent and the Grenadines, Windward Islands, Combined Islands and the West Indies, as wicketkeeper-batsman.

Findlay played 10 test matches for the West Indies, and also served West Indies in the capacities of selector and team manager.

Meanwhile, Munroe, who was absent from last Saturday’s presentation, was part of the famed St Vincent and the Grenadines football team that placed second in the Caribbean Football Union’s final in Suriname in 1979.

A member of the Super Stars Football Club in the 1970s and early 1980s, Munroe kept his club as a force with his competence in goal.

He later moved to play in his team’s defence, before bowing out.

Since leaving the active stage of football, Munroe has served as a trainer for the Avenues Football Club.
