Senior CASA singles titles stay intact

The senior men’s and women’s singles titles of the National Lotteries Authority Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) championships remained in the palms of the 2016 champions.

Making it seven-in-a-row in the men’s event was Jamaican Chris Binnie, who humbled Cameron Stafford of the Cayman Islands in straight sets, 12-10, 11-7, 11-4.

It was Binnie’s eighth title in nine years, having also triumphed in 2009.

Binnie had slid past Micah Franklin of Bermuda 12-10, 11-9, 12-10 and Stafford beat Joe Chapman of the OECS 11-9, 11-4, 11-5, to reach last Tuesday’s final at the National Squash Centre at Paul’s Avenue.

 Franklin stopped Chapman 8-11, 3-11, 11-4, 11-3, 11-4, in the third place play-off, which preceded the Binnie versus Cameron showdown.

 In women’s play, Barbadian Megan Best was again better than Karen Meakins, as she reclaimed the title.

Best, aged 15, outlasted fellow Barbadian Meakins, a four-time title holder, 11-8, 11-7, 11-5.

In getting to the final, Best beat Mary Fung-A-Fat of Guyana, 11-5, 11-6, 11-4, while Meakins got past Guyanese Ashley Khalil, 11-6, 11-7, 11-7.

Fung-A-Fat had the better of Khalil, 14-12, 12-10, 8-11, 11-7, to win the third place, in Tuesday evening’s play.

The championships finish tomorrow, with the finals of the teams competitions in the men’s, women’s and veterans’ categories.

Apart from the National Squash Centre, matches in the XXV edition of the championships are staged at the Dr Cecil Cyrus courts at New Montrose.
