SVG fourth in WISG … Grenada first again

St Vincent and the Grenadines did not make use of home advantage and put on one of its worst performances in recent times at the CBN/ Winlott Inc Windward Islands Schools’ Games (WISG), which ended last Saturday.

The host was the lone island not to win a discipline and was also last in three.

St Vincent and the Grenadines’ females were last in netball, basketball and volleyball.

The males showed up as second placers in football, volleyball and basketball, while the combined track and field team was third.

While St Vincent and the Grenadines occupied the last spot, Grenada continued their winning ways, to make it six successive overall titles, counting from 2012.

Grenada won track and field, football, male and female basketball, male volleyball and were second in netball and third in female volleyball.

Second placed St Lucia copped netball and were second in track and field and female volleyball, third in female basketball, but last in male basketball and male volleyball.

Meanwhile, third placed Dominica won the female volleyball discipline; placed second in female basketball and were third in male basketball, male volleyball and netball. Dominica finished last in track and field, as well as football.

The last three days of competition, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, saw Grenada maintaining their hold on the disciplines they led.

Grenada had a decisive win over St Vincent and the Grenadines in male volleyball on Thursday at Gomea, winning 3-1 (10-25, 25-15, 25-21, 25-19), while Dominica got past St Lucia, 3-1 (20-25, 25-20, 25-20, 26-24 ).

In netball at Keartons, Grenada ousted St Vincent and the Grenadines, 33-22 and St Lucia stopped Dominica 32 – 27.

Also on Thursday at Keartons, Grenada edged out SVG 59-57 and Dominica saw off St Lucia 79-50.

On Friday, in female volleyball at Gomea, Grenada had a hard-fought 3-2 (25-12, 25-18, 16-25, 13-25, 15-12) win over St Lucia and Dominica blanked SVG 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-18).

Also on Friday at Arnos Vale in football, Grenada were held to a 2-2 draw by St Lucia. Rahim Stephens scored both of Grenada’s items in the 40th and 56th minutes, while Patrice Richards (25th minute) and Alvinus Myers (69th minute) responded for St Lucia.

 And, St Vincent and the Grenadines beat Dominica 4-2. A double by Hosni Chandler in the 8th and 84th minutes, Javil Samuel scoring in the 47th minute and an own-goal scored by Dominican defender Kassim Peltier in the 76th minute added up to the Vincentians’ tally.

Marcellus Bowney and Usher George netted in the 29th and 83rd minutes for Dominica.

Female basketball crowned the penultimate day of competition at Arnos Vale, with Grenada trumping over St Lucian and Dominica mauling SVG 72-5.

And, on Saturday, Grenada stopped St Lucia 42-20 and St Vincent and the Grenadines defeated Dominica 70-62 in male basketball at Arnos Vale.

In netball at Gomea, St Lucia outlasted Grenada 39-32, with Dominica sidestepping the hosts 40-27, and at the same venue in male volleyball, Grenada beat St Lucia 3-0, while St Vincent and the Grenadines registered a 3-1 beating over Dominica.

The final points standing reads Grenada – 43; St Lucia – 25, Dominica – 23 and St Vincent and the Grenadines – 21.

The 2018 edition of the WISG is set for St Lucia.
