SVGCC reaches Sir Garfield Sobers Int’l Schools’ Cricket Tournament semis

The French Verandah SVG Community College’s cricket team is into the semi-finals of the Sir Garfield Sobers International Schools Tournament, taking place in Barbados.

The SVG Community College confirmed their semi-finals berth on Tuesday, with a five-wicket triumph over Bryanston School of England, in a fixture affected by rain.

The Community College’s captain Jeremy Layne had called correctly at the toss and inserted Bryanston School, in what started as a 35-over affair. The English unit reached 98 for 5 after 30 overs, when rain stopped play and ended their innings. Opener Harrison Clarke scored 30 and Frank Turrill and Ollie Thomas, 26 and 20 not out, respectively. Roshorn John took 3 for 12.

Play after lunch was further delayed due to rain, after which the Vincentians were set 67 to win in 20 overs. The SVG Community College lost five wickets in getting to 67 in 11.4 overs. Alex Samuel led with 27 not out. Harrison Clarke picked up 2 for 24, bowling for Bryanston School.

It was the SVG Community College’s sixth win in the tournament.

The SVG Community College registered win number five on Monday, as they defeated the St Leonard’s School of Barbados by 120 runs.

The Community College decided to bat first and worked their way to 246 for 6 in 30 overs, at the cut-off point for the first innings. Their total was behind a third wicket stand of 136 between Dillon Douglas, 94, and Jeremy Layne, 91. Alex Samuel also contributed 24. Antonio Austin, 3 for 53, was the most successful bowler for St Leonard’s School.

In reply, the Barbadian school team was restricted to 126 for 9 in their allotted 30 overs. Coshon Scott, 39, and Rashoud Eli, 20, were their principal scorers. Donte Hinson picked up 2 for 21.

Following Wednesday’s rest day, the SVG Community College was slated to play their seventh of the preliminary round yesterday, Thursday, against the Presentation College of Trinidad and Tobago.
