SVG’s team ready for CYG outing

Three track and field athletes and two swimmers will compete under the St Vincent and the Grenadines banner at the sixth hosting of the Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) in the Bahamas from today, Tuesday, July 18 – 23.

The trio of Darria Matthias, Zita Vincent and Javon Rawlins are the track and field participants, with Shane Cadogan and Nikolas Sylvester making up the aquatics competitors.

Matthias will run in the female 100 metres; Vincent contests the female 800 and 1,500m and Rawlins, the male 100m, 200m and long jump.

Meanwhile, Cadogan and Sylvester are listed to pit their skills in the 50m butterfly, the 50m and 100m breaststroke, 50m backstroke and the 50m freestyle.

The St Vincent and the Grenadines team is managed by Wayne Williams, with Neisha Alexander as coach.

Also debuting for St Vincent and the Grenadines are officials Woodrow Williams and Roxanne Williams.

Woodrow Williams, a certified international technical official, will preside over the field events in the track and field discipline of the CYG, while Roxanne Williams is a white badge tennis umpire and will officiate in the tennis component.

Apart from track and field, swimming and tennis, the other disciplines which will consume the CYG 2017 are beach soccer, beach volleyball, boxing, cycling, judo and rugby sevens.

It will be the first time for beach soccer, beach volleyball and judo at the CYG.

The CYG, which caters to participants between the ages of 14 and 18, was first staged in 2000 in Edinburg, Scotland.

Since then, there were editions in Bendigo, Australia (2004), Pune, India (2008), Isle of Man (2011) and Apia, Samoa (2015).
