Gomea gets new volleyball sport court

The grounds of the Gomea Methodist School, located in the constituency of West St George, has a volleyball sport court added to it.

On island for some time, the sport court, the second to be installed, is another of the direct contributions made by the North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA) to the St Vincent and the Grenadines Volleyball Association.

Valued at US$ 30 000, with the cost of shipping borne by the Volleyball Federation, the local association facilitated the court’s installation.

Overseen by St Lucian Hevron Browne, with able help from members of the volleyball fraternity, namely the young players on the schools’ team for the Windward Islands schools’ games, the sport court, coloured red and blue, was laid.

The Gomea sport court is just in time for the games, as matches in the volleyball component are expected to be contested at the venue.

The hard surface on which the court was laid was recently prepared through the instrumentality of Minister of Tourism, Sports and Culture and parliamentary representative for West St George Cecil Mc Kie.

At the completion of the construction work recently, Mc Kie, in a release, noted that the court will “facilitate the revival of the ASCO organised netball tournament in the area, which was on hold based on the poor condition of the court, and the representative’s plan to implement the West St. George Primary Schools Netball Competition”.

“The new volleyball court also located at the Gomea school compound, which is complemented with a 60-seat bleacher, will accelerate McKie’s drive for the reintroduction of volleyball in the area and the possible return to the glory days of the Gomea Bombers, which ruled the roost in the 70s and 80s, and which resulted in the community being recognised as the ‘Mecca of volleyball’ during that era,” the release added.

The new court at Gomea follows on the first one, laid at the Girls’ High School in 2014.
