SVGOC observes International Olympic Day

The St Vincent and the Grenadines Olympic Committee (SVGOC) played its part in the annual celebration of International Olympic Day.

Commemorated June 23, the SVGOC utilized the follwing day, Saturday, to ramp up their input with a day of activities staged at the Grammar School Playing Field.

Attended by affiliate members of the SVGOC, Saturday’s programme included taekwondo demonstrations, boxing demonstartions, rowing, small goal football, Kids In Athletics and other fun activities, while basketball was at the Calliaqua hard court and volleyball at the Girls’ High School hard court.

Following the on field and on court sessions, participants journeyed through Kingstown for an Olympic Day Walk.

In his message to observe the International Olympic Day, president of the SVG Olympic Committee Trevor Bailey said. “I would like to remind us

that Olympic Day is for everyone, young, old, rich or poor and is celebrated by 206 National Olympic Committees worldwide…This is the time we join together to bring peace to every nation… We must never forget that sport is also for fun and enjoyment, so let us have fun while we enjoy playing sports and stay fit for the rest of our lives… It is high time for us to make the world a better place.

 “Participating in Olympic Day activities is an opportunity to meet more people and make new friends, have more love and let our voices be heard when we stand up against the evils of the world, like hate, crimes and violence… Get active in sports today, participate in our Olympic Day activities, and let us come together to fight against crime, pray for peace and let us bring the world together through sports,” the SVGOC president noted.

International Olympic Day started in 1948 to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympic Games on June 23, 1894, at the Sorbonne in Paris.

The goal was to promote participation in sports across the globe, irrespective of age, gender or athletic abilities.
