SVG U-19 cricketers retain Windwards title, complete hat-trick

St Vincent and the Grenadines Under-19 cricket team retained the Winlott Inc Windward Islands tournament, to make it a hat-trick of wins, but this time had to share it with host St Lucia, after rain severely affected the second and third round of matches.

After handing Dominica a heavy 10-wicket defeat at the Gros Islet ground, St Vincent and the Grenadines’ lads, like the others, had to watch from the stands.

When St Vincent and the Grenadines met St Lucia, also at the Gros Islet ground, the match ended in a no-decision.

Dillion Douglas, SVG’s vice-captain stroked 205 not out from 245 balls, in which he counted 19 fours and 11 sixes.

Batting at number four, Douglas shared in two crucial partnerships. He and Tijourn Pope (35), put on 74 for the fourth wicket and then 53 with his captain Jeremy Layne for the fifth wicket.

When play ended, St Vincent and the Grenadines was 348 for 5.

Earlier, Kimani Melinus belted 14 fours and 12 sixes in his 60; Johnnel Eugene, 93 (10x 4, 4×6), while Keegan Patrick slammed 8 fours in his 48 not out, as the hosts piled on 421 for 9 declared.

Twin brothers Sealron and Sealroy Williams were SVG’s most successful bowlers, taking 4 for 144 and 2 for 28, respectively.

Then, when the Vincentians faced Grenada at the Mindoo Phillip Ground, the only possible play in the match saw Grenada reaching 67 for 3.

In the Vincentians’ match versus Dominica, the summarized scores were Dominica – 90; Rayon Williams, 6 for 25, Jerremy Haywood, 3 for 12. Second innings – 226: Tahj Tavenier, 66, Rayon Williams, 5 for 41. SVG – 269: Jeremy Layne, 86 not out and Jahiel Walters, 55; and 47 for 0 in their second innings.

Meanwhile, St Lucia had a five-wicket win over Grenada in round one. Scores: Grenada – 73 and 221; St Lucia – 152 and 143 for 5.

Joint champions St Lucia had their third round match against Dominica ending in a no-decision. Dominica made 329 and St Lucia 119 for 3.

Also having a no result was the Grenada versus Dominica encounter at the Mindoo Phillip Ground, which was abandoned.
