All systems churning for WISG 2017

Technical official for the CBN/Winlott Inc Windward Islands School Games 2017 Woodrow Williams says the St Vincent and the Grenadines is in an advanced state of preparedness to host this year’s edition, from July 21 to July 30.

Williams, in his brief delivery at a press conference last Tuesday at the Curriculum Development Unit’s conference room, stated: “It is the responsibility of the Ministry of Tourism, Sports and Culture to ensure that these Games run properly… As it is, right now we are going to prepare a work plan [as to] how we are going to accomplish our task”.

St Vincent and the Grenadines will host the other Windward Islands – Dominica, St Lucia and Grenada, as the four compete for supremacy in football, netball, male and female basketball, male and female volleyball and track and field.

And, several venues across the mainland have been listed to host the various disciplines.

Detailing the proposed competition venues was education officer for Physical Education and Sports Rosmund Griffith.

“We have Arnos Vale, where we are hoping to have male volleyball, football, female basketball, track and field, netball and male basketball… We are also planning to use the Girls’ High School hard court for female and male volleyball… The Georgetown Playing Field and hard court for male basketball, netball, football and female basketball and the Keartons hard court for male basketball and netball,” Griffith said.

Supporting the efforts of the local organizing committee, which is chaired by Elizabeth Walker, deputy chief education officer, are the Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment, the National Sports Council and the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force.

Again, the West St George Secondary School, located in Belair, will house the close to 300 students and officials.

Also speaking at last Tuesday’s media conference were Walker and Dougal James, a director of Winlott Inc.
