SVGCC adds rowing, auto sports to 2017-2018 calendar

SVGCC adds rowing, auto sports to 2017-2018 calendar

The disciplines of rowing and auto sports are the two new additions to the St Vincent and the Grenadines Community College (SVGCC) sports programme for the 2017 -2018 academic year.

A release from the college shows that a club for those disciplines is earmarked to be launched in January 2018.

When they come into fruition, they join taekwondo, which was included this academic year.

Giving the reason behind the new additions, sports coordinator at the SVGCC Roxell John told SEARCHLIGHT: “We want to expand the scope of the sports covered … We are hoping to have the interest of the females, especially in rowing; also auto sports coincides with the auto programme done at the Technical Division of the College”.

John added that prior to the opening of the new academic year, a special event is being framed for the new intake of students to give them an insight of what is on offer at the college’s sports programme.

Starting off the college’s programme are the inter-faculty football competitions, which will be followed by the inter-divisional showdown.

The period September 26 to November 10, 2017 has been set aside for the football.

Meanwhile, in between the football competitions, taekwondo will consume the month of November 2017, with the inter-divisional netball competition set for November 7 to December 1, 2017.

The SVGCC invitational tennis competition is listed to be held between November 29 and December, 8, 2017.

The start of 2018 will also see the SVGCC’s one-week tour to Carriacou for a series of football matches.

From January 30 to February 16, the inter-divisional basketball competition is carded to be played, while the SVGCC’s cricket team will continue its participation in the national cricket programme from the month of January.

On the agenda for March is the inter-divisional track and field championships and in April, the SVGCC teams will make their presence known in the national competitions of netball, volleyball and basketball.

Also on the schedule for the SVGCC is a planned maiden participation in the Penn Relays in the USA, in April.

The college’s athletes will again travel to Trinidad and Tobago in May for the Albilene Wildcats Track Classic and the cricketers to Barbados, for the annual Sir Garfield Sobers international schools’ tournament in July.
