Vincy Masters bring home Barbados Football Festival title

Computec Vincy Masters were last Monday crowned champions of the Banks International Masters Football Festival at the Wanderers Ground in Barbados.

Facing the 2015 winners Widley of Barbados, Vincy Masters had to depend on the nerves from the penalty spot, as they ran out 4-2 winners from spot kicks.

Both teams had played to a 0-0 draw in regulation time.

Vincy Masters had set up their date with destiny in the final, having navigated successfully the preliminary phase and the elimination rounds.

Vincy Masters came out of Group 4 unbeaten, after first defeating AIA Caledonia of Trinidad and Tobago 2-0, thanks to a brace by Dexter Walker.

Walker and Kendall Velox had an item each to lead their team to a two-nil triumph over Wadada of Barbados in their second.

Then Velox and Terrance Harry scored a goal each, as Vincy Masters came away winners 2-1, at the expense of Empire of Barbados.

This put Vincy Masters into the round of 16 and a match-up with Paradise of Barbados.

A nil-nil draw necessitated kicks from the penalty spot and Vincy Masters came out winners 6-5.

The Vincentian outfit won again from spot kicks in the quarter-finals, as a goal each from Tyrone Prince, Wesley Charles and Cornelius Huggins earned them a 3-1 dismissal of Benfica of the host country.

Charles was to be the hero in the semi-finals, as his last minute goal stunned Sunday Krew of Trinidad and Tobago, which set up the grand finale with Widley.

Wesley Charles was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, in which 48 teams contested.

Among the list were 22 foreign outfits.

Last Monday’s triumph for Vincy Masters was their third, having copped titles in 2008 and 2014.

Vincy Masters were runners-up in 2011 as well.

The Vincy Masters team is comprised mainly of players who have represented St Vincent and the Grenadines at the senior level.
