Inaugural schools’ 3×3 Basketball titles decided

The winners of the inaugural Secondary Schools’ 3×3 Basketball Competition, put on by the St Vincent and the Grenadines Basketball Federation, were decided last Friday at the Girls’ High School.

After the two-day competition, the Bequia Community High School Team 1 emerged winners of the male division and the Petit Bordel Secondary Team 1, the female category.

Bequia Community High School had a 9-8 win over George Stephens Senior Secondary School in the male final. This, after the match went into overtime, as they had played to a 7-7 tie in the 10 minutes of regulation time.

In the female final, the Petit Bordel Secondary School edged out Troumaca Ontario Secondary 3-2 in their showdown for the honours.

The winning schools and the runners-up were presented with trophies. In store for the two winners is a HP Laser Jet 2600 printer, as indicated by the SVG Basketball Federation promotion material prior to the two-day competition.

Apart from being crowned the overall champions, the winning schools will receive ongoing technical support from the SVGBF to assist with the basketball programmes at the respective schools.

And, each participating school will get official Wilson 3×3 balls, with two on offer to schools contesting one category and five, for those who enter in both gender categories.

Taking the individual accolades that were at stake were the Bequia Community High’s Nicholas Lewis, who was adjudged the male division’s Most Valuable Player and Ranique Harry of the Petit Bordel Secondary, the corresponding female awardee.

Both the Bequia Community High and the Petit Bordel Secondary were winners in the 2016 schools’ basketball tournament, when a full-fledged format was convened last year.

Also participating in the maiden competition were teams from the Girls’ High School, the Bishop’s College Kingstown, West St George Secondary, Bequia Seventh Day Adventist, Thomas Saunders Secondary and the St Vincent Grammar School.

Each school was allowed a maximum of three teams in each of the divisions.

The 3×3 competition was used as a talent identification of players for the upcoming Windward Islands Schools’ games, to be hosted here in St Vincent and the Grenadines in July.
