SVGCC finish seventh in Sir Garfield Sobers Cricket Tournament

The French Verandah St Vincent and the Grenadines Community College (SVGCC) placed seventh in the 30th edition of the Sir Garfield Sobers Cricket Tournament, which was set to conclude yesterday in Barbados.

Debutants in the tournament, SVGCC, won four matches, lost two and had two abandoned because of rain.{{more}}

The wins came versus Fatima College, Vishnu Hindu College, both of Trinidad and Tobago, as well as St Leonard’s Boys and Hamilton Lashley Foundation of Barbados, with the defeats coming from Oakville Cricket Academy and Presentation College of Canada and Trinidad and Tobago respectively.

Facing Hamilton Lashley Foundation in the play-off for seventh place in the 16-team tournament, SVGCC won by seven wickets.

Scores: Hamilton Lashley Foundation 127 all out from 30 overs. Andre Skeete made 43.

Othniel Lewis had 3/13 and Jeremy Haywood 2/24. SVGCC replied with 128 for 3.

Jeremy Layne stroked 53, Othneil Lewis, 28 and Samii Peters, 25.

Meanwhile, SVGCC beat Fatima College by 54 runs.

SVGCC were 144 all out in 34 overs. Othniel Lewis scored 35 and Tilron Harry – 26, with Tyrone Phillips taking 3 for 27.

Fatima College scored 90 all out in 31.5 overs. Andrew Gibson made 29, while Jeremy Haywood took 3/14, Ronaldo Franklyn – 2/6 and Jeremy Layne – 2/17.

SVGCC’s six–wicket win against Vishnu Hindu College saw them dismissing their opponents for 94 in 38.1 overs. Haywood bagged 4/17, Shane Roberts 2/19 and Franklyn 2/22, being the main wicket takers for SVGCC, who then responded with 96 for 4 in 13.4 overs.

Tilron Harry led the way with 53, while Adrian Williams had 2/14, for the losers.

Versus St Leonard’s Boys, SVGCC won by three wickets. St Leonard’s Boys scored 124 all out in 37.3 overs, with Tauron Gibson making 47 and Savio Eastmond – 25.

Layne grabbed 3/19 and Haywood – 2/20 for SVGCC, who on the back of 25 apiece from Deroney May and Tilron Harry, reached 125 for 7 in 32.5 overs. Akeem Williams took 3/33 and Romario Oneal 2/18.

In losing to eventual tournament finalists Oakville Cricket Academy by four wickets, SVGCC tallied 119 for 9 from their 40 overs. Kody Horne scored 33, as Marcus Nandu took 2/13 and Denniel Griffiths 2/35.

Oakville Cricket Academy replied with 120 for 6. Guaranshu Sharma was 57 not out. Ohniel Lewis had 2 for 23.

The loss against Presentation College was by seven wickets.

Scores: SVGCC – 126 all out in 32 overs. Othniel Lewis – 55 not out.

Bowling for Presentation College, Emilo Gopaul took 3/21, Khalid Hudson 2/14, Joel Sutherland 2/20 and Keron Persaud 2/37.

Presentation College made 130 for 3 in 26.4 overs; Joel Sutherland was 54 not out and Keron Persaud – 29 not out.

The abandoned matches were against Queen’s College of Guyana and Foundation of Barbados.

Jeremy Layne, Jeremy Haywood, Shane Roberts and Othniel Lewis were all selected to attend training for the Master Class All Stars, set for today, Tuesday.(RT)
