BBA to address FIBA referees shortage

Sabrina Mitchell, the recently re-elected president of the Bequia Basketball Association, says her association needs to address this issue of the absence of FIBA approved referees on the island.{{more}}

This, after the two approved referees Michael Peniston and Shem Ollivierre, who served the sport in its annual tournaments over the years, migrated.

Mitchell, who was returned unopposed last Wednesday when the association held its Annual General Meeting and elections of officers at the Bequia District Council, on the other hand, lauded the more than 50 volunteers who annually assist with the excellent execution of the tournament.

Also elected unopposed at last week’s meeting were Cornelius Farrell – vice-president and Colson Peters – treasurer.

The new players’ representative is Kelan Edwards, with Anthony Sargeant, the new general secretary.

Meanwhile, six new faces are on the executive.

They are Delwin Simmons – games secretary, along with Dominique Hendrickson as assistant secretary treasurer and Garret Edwards, Warren Ollivierre, Kamol Hutchins and Xavaughn Dennie – committee members .

The immediate task of the new executive, which will serve until 2017, will be to get the 17th annual Bequia Basketball Tournament going.

The Vita Malt sponsored tournament is set to bounce off July 11 at the Clive Tannis hard court and runs until August 30.

Matches will be played on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.(RT)
