Spring Village returns to top of Biabou Football

Spring Village (SV) United carted off the league title of the Hairoun Beer Biabou football competition last Sunday afternoon at the Biabou Playing Field, signalling the team’s return to glory in that locale.{{more}}

Double champions in 2013, SV United was dethroned last year by Computec Cane End in the league finals on kicks from the penalty spot.

But there was no such letting up last Sunday, when SV United squared off with Sparta FC in the tournament’s final match, watched by a large crowd.

SV United was left to chase, as Sparta FC went ahead in the latter part of the first half through Euston Duncan.

The momentum, however, swung in the second half, as SV United took the match by the scruff of the neck.

The talented Ivan Clarke showed his versatility when he came on as a second half substitute, to restore parity, burying an indirect free kick.

Clarke then doubled his team’s score when he rose above the Sparta FC defence to head the ball past goalkeeper Kingsley Joseph, as SV United ran away, 2-1 winners.

For taking the first place, SV United took hold of the challenge trophy, plus a trophy for keeps, medals and a cash prize of $1,500.

Sparta FC collected medals, a trophy and a cash award of $1,200.

SV United had a 6-3 win over Richland Park Pride and Joy Youths in the semi-finals, while Sparta FC undid Diamond United 2-1.

Richland Park Pride and Joy Youths – the knockout winners, went on to take the third place trophy and $1,000, as Diamond United defaulted in the play-off.

By reclaiming the title in the Biabou set-up, SV United, later this year, has the North East title also to defend.

A total of 16 outfits participated in this year’s Biabou tournament.(RT)
