West Kingstown bank Under-13 football title

Last Thursday afternoon proved to be a good investment for the West Kingstown outfit, as they deposited, for safe keeping, the St Vincent Co-operative Bank Under-13 category of the National Inter Community League Championships.{{more}}

West Kingstown, in an entertaining final, dethroned last year’s winners, Central Kingstown, 3-1 on kicks from the penalty spot in the first of three finals played at the Victoria Park.

This, after both teams had played to a stalemate in regulation and extra time.

West Kingstown had played unbeaten throughout, keeping a clean sheet throughout, conceding no goals in open play.

Welcoming his team’s win was coach Kendall John, who thought it was a case of “poetic justice.”

“I feel good about the win, as last year I felt we had one of the best teams, but we were knocked out by the same Central Kingstown, and to come back this year and beat them on penalties, gives me a good feeling,” John declared.

John was referring to last year’s competition, which was riddled with allegations of some teams fielding over age players.

Despite several protests however, president of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation Venold Coombs unilaterally overruled the protesting teams’ inquiries.

A few murmurings were heard again this year, but they were not as audible as in 2014.

Before getting to Thursday’s final, West Kingstown won on kicks from the penalty spot over East Kingstown, last year’s beaten finalist, while Central Kingstown defeated GECCU Calliaqua, thus ensuring an all Kingstown final for the second year in succession.

Debutants Calliaqua went on to take the third place with a one-nil win over East Kingstown.(RT)
