RSVG Police take command of regional cricket competition

The other four teams that participated in the annual Regional Security Service Cricket had to stand at attention and salute the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force team.{{more}}

Grenada, St Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados gave the host the eyes right last Easter weekend here at the Arnos Vale Playing Field. Making an about turn, following their loss on Holy Thursday to Grenada by three runs, the Vincentians rose triumphantly on Resurrection Sunday at the main Arnos Vale venue.

Inserted by Grenada, St Vincent and the Grenadines, after a promising start, stuttered during the middle part of their march, to finish on 128 for 7 from their 20 overs.

Mc Leon Williams – 27 and Parnel Browne – 25, were the principal scorers.

Bowling for the Grenadians, Kenroy Peters took 2 for 21 and Kenny Stanislaus – 2 for 29.

Some careless batting, backed by some security tight bowling and good old cricket by the RSVG Police team, combined to rein in their Grenadian counterparts, who buckled for 106 all out.

Mohammad Lavia extended his bowling arm to the limit, as he elbowed 3 for 9 and Romario Bibby – 2 for 20, to give their team a 22-run win.

Imran Francis – 28 and Kenny Stanislaus – 25, threatened momentarily the stability of the RSVG Police’s reinforcement.

Tied match

The competition peaked on Easter Saturday, as St Vincent and the Grenadines and St Lucia played to an exciting tie.

St Lucia posted 177 for 6 from their 20 overs. Aiding the St Lucians’ total was some poor catching by Vincentian fielders.

In between, David Baptiste cracked 47 not out and Essau Gabriel – 39.

Alexander was the pick of the Vincy bowlers, snaring 3 for 9.

RSVG Police’s reply was assured with Salvan Browne (32) and promoted to number three – Kenneth Dember added 76 for the second wicket. Dember put on 60 with Panel Browne for the third wicket, with the former being the dominant batsman.

Poised on 92 and eyeing a century, Dember fell after striking eight fours and three sixes, to leave RSVG Police on 148 for 3.

Needing 30 in three overs, three wickets then fell for the addition of 18 runs, to set up the last over drama. It meant that the pair of Gosnel Cupid and Donson Andrews was asked to get 12 from six balls.

After each mustering singles from the first two balls, Andrews struck boundaries from the third and fifth balls.

Two to win and one to tie with one ball to go, was the nerve-racking scenario,

The pair scrambled a bye, to leave the scores levelled in all respects, as RSVG Police ended as well on 177 for 6.

Playing conditions meant that both teams earned a point each.(RT)
