GSS sweep schools’ volleyball titles

The Georgetown Secondary School has done the double in the Secondary Schools’ Volleyball Tournament.

Their sweep of the title was assured last Thursday, when they outpointed both the Girls’ High School and the George Stephens Secondary. {{more}}It was the females who set the tone for the school’s domination of the titles.

Exhibiting character, the lasses from the Georgetown Secondary had to erase a two-set lead established by the Girls’ High School. At home on their court, the Girls’ High School won the first two sets — 27-24 , 25-23 — much to the consternation of the 2014 champions.

Georgetown Secondary, with their title on the line, went about the restoration work and with a tiring Girls’ High School outfit, the Georgetown Secondary took charge to win 25-19, 25-17, 15-7.

This win evoked some energy in the Georgetown Secondary School’s camp, and the males took the cue. Seeking their fourth successive lien on the male title, the George Stephens Secondary won the first 25-18, before the Georgetown Secondary School ran away with the other three sets 25-11, 27-25, 25-19.

Revenging three previous defeats by the George Stephens Secondary School, Georgetown reversed their fortunes to earn their maiden win. Savouring the win most was the school’s coach, Cassius Franklyn, who told SEARCHLIGHT that it was on the cards to happen this time around.“This year we decided to pick a purely volleyball team of players, with most of the guys who practise together in Dickson,” Franklyn said.

He noted that the chemistry was always there throughout, as the players are a well-knitted bunch. Both Georgetown Secondary teams had two sets to nil triumphs in their semi-final match-ups. The females overcame the Thomas Saunders Secondary and the males outlasted the Dr JP Eustace Memorial.

In the other half of the last four, the Girls’ High School beat the George Stephens Secondary, two sets to nil and the losing male finalist, the George Stephens Secondary, had a 2-1 downing of West St George Secondary.

The females of the George Stephens Secondary went on to take the third place, with the West St George Secondary placing third among the males.

George Stephens saw off Thomas Saunders Secondary in straight sets, 25-15, 25-8 and West St George Secondary recorded a 29-19, 25-17 win at the expense of the Dr JP Eustace Memorial.

The presentation of trophies and awards won in the tournament would take place at a date and venue to be announced.(RT)
