Volleyball heads to primary schools

With a move to give root to the sport, the executive of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Volleyball Association is positioning itself to make a greater push to serve the primary schools.{{more}}

A visit by Canadian coach Scott Schutz next month is the basis for the introductory process to the pre-teens. Schutz’s visit, from April 18 to 28, is being made possible through assistance from the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association (ECVA).

President of the local association Alana Mc Master, in outlining her organization’s intent, told SEARCHLIGHT: “2014 was a competition year for the association; this year we are concentrating on developing all aspect of the sport – the players, the coaches and our referees.”

Mc Master revealed that another coach from Canada has been on the ground from last weekend to aid in this development outlay.

“Sean Mc Kay, who is also from Canada, is here with us and he will be guest of the association for the next four months. He would be assisting with our grassroots programmes,” Mc Master added.

The local volleyball head said that Mc Kay’s stint is made possible from a National Sport Structure development grant from the National Olympic Committee of St Vincent and the Grenadines.

In terms of ensuring that there is activity for the other parts of the sport’s chain, Mc Master said that the various firms are readying themselves for their business of volleyball, which is set to commence shortly.

She noted that on the heels of the firms’ competition, the national club championships would serve off.(RT)
