Cricket retains Senior Sportsman of the Year title

When Sunil Ambris was announced as Senior Sportsman of the Year, last Saturday night at the National Sports Awards for 2014, it was the second consecutive year that a cricketer was doing so.{{more}}

Ambris repeated what his St Vincent and the Grenadines and Windwards team mate Delorn Johnson attained at the 2013 ceremony.

The 21-year-old Ambris was unavoidably absent from last Saturday’s ceremony, which was staged at the Spring Gardens Estate, Biabou, as he was on duty in St Lucia with the Windwards Volcanoes in the Professional League.

Making his first class debut in 2014, Ambris hit a chanceless 114 in his first match against Guyana. His maiden first class century was punctuated with 17 fours, facing 200 balls and batted for 238 minutes.

Ambris hit his second century during the final of the regional competition versus Jamaica at the Beausejour Cricket Stadium in St Lucia.

A former St Vincent and the Grenadines, Windwards and West Indies Under-15 and Under-19 player, Ambris was called up to the High Performance team which faced Bangladesh A in a series of matches here in the Caribbean.

He was a member of the St Lucia Zouks in the inaugural Caribbean Premier League, then earned an elevation to the West Indies A team that toured Sri Lanka in October/ November.

Ambris’ efforts during the year under review got the judges’ nod over the other contenders for the national award.

Apart from Ambris, footballer Cornelius Stewart; bodybuilder Garwin Phillips; cyclist Cammie Adams and Taekwondo’s Mikhail Charles were the finalists chosen by the panel of judges, which comprised Dr Lennox Adams, Jenita Lewis and Rohan Thomas.(RT)
