Barrouallie and Kingstown win as NICL Football Championships open

Defending champions of the Senior Men’s Division of the Hairoun Beer/Digicel National Inter Community League Football Championships – Bank of St Vincent and the Grenadines Barrouallie, has made a winning start to this year’s edition.[{more}}

When the 2015 edition kicked off last Sunday at the Victoria Park, Barrouallie, who have copped the title for the past three years, showed the mettle of true champions, handing North Leeward a five-nil beating.

A brace by Kyle Edwards, a goal each from Ishan Adams, Clinton Griffith and Chavel Cunningham accounted for Barrouallie’s heavy deposit.

But it was a closer encounter when last year’s losing finalist Central Kingstown engaged newly crowned All Leeward champions South Leeward.

Slow to settle and disjointed in the defence, South Leeward found themselves trailing in the 11th minute through a Deomaji Samuel strike.

Two minutes later, it was more agony for South Leeward, as they scored an own goal.

But Tevin Slater cut the deficit in half in the 54th minute, before Samuel extended Central Kingstown’s lead with a 63rd minute strike.

Central Kingstown returned the compliment by registering an own goal in the 75th minute, but Samuel continued his goal scoring, completing his hat-trick in the 86th minute, as Central Kingstown came away winners, 4-2.

Eighteen teams are contesting the Senior Men’s Division. In Group A are Barrouallie, North Leeward, Bequia, Buccament, East Kingstown and South East, while Central Kingstown, South Leeward, Georgetown, North Windward, Sion Hill and Stubbs make up Group B. And in Group C are West Kingstown, Arnos Vale, Calliaqua, Greiggs, Layou and Marriaqua.

Apart from the Senior Men’s Division, there are the Under 17, Under 13 and Female divisions.

The winners of the Senior Men’s will get $10,000, with the runner up earning $7,000, the third place $3,000 and the fourth place $1,000.

Additionally, for each win in the preliminary round, a team gets $100, while in a win in the second round has a $150 value.

The stakes go to $200 and $250, for wins in the quarter and semi-finals respectively.

The prizes in Under 17 see the winner pocketing $5,000, second place – $3,000, third place – $1,000 and the fourth place – $500.

The winning outfit in the Under 13 and Women’s Divisions earns $3,000, second place – $2,000, third place – $1,000 and fourth – $500.
