GSSS entertain thoughts of fourth male schools’ volleyball title

Making it four in a row is the ambition of the George Stephens Secondary School (GSSS) team and coaching staff in the male division of the Q-Care Secondary Schools’ Volleyball competition.{{more}}

Expressing that desire last Friday at the opening of the 2015 edition at the Girls’ High School’s hard court was the school’s Physical Education teacher Kathleen James.

Basing her aspirations on team composition, James told SEARCHLIGHT: “We have the best team and we are going make it four straight.”

A confident James predicted that both the George Stephens Secondary and the Georgetown Secondary would be in the finals, as has been the case since the inception of the competition in 2012.

James also noted that the school possesses some of the most talented male players who are of school age, hence the boldness of her prediction.

The George Stephens Secondary, which copped the titles in 2012, 2013 and 2014, last Friday showed off their dominance by beating the Thomas Saunders Secondary School in straight sets, 25-11, 25-8.

Before them though, the females of the George Stephens Secondary also got past the Thomas Saunders Secondary, downing their opponents 25-18, 26-24, in a more competitive affair.

Eight male teams and seven female outfits are vying for title honours.

Among the male participants are the West St George Secondary, the Georgetown Secondary, the Bethel High School and new entrant – the Buccament Bay Secondary, who are stashed in Zone A; the George Stephens Secondary, the Dr JP Eustace Memorial, Thomas Saunders Secondary and another new team – Bishop’s College Kingstown, make up Zone B.

Zone A of the females comprises the Bishop’s College Kingstown, the Girls’ High School, Buccament Bay Secondary and the Georgetown Secondary. Completing Zone B are George Stephens, Thomas Saunders and Dr JP Eustace Memorial.

The two top teams from each of the zones advance to the semi-finals, slated for March 2 and 4.

The winners of the semi-finals advance to the March 13 finals, with the third place play-offs set for March 6. (RT)
