Who is top goal scorer in schools’ senior football competition?

Two slip-ups by the organizers of the Secondary Schools’ Football tournament have left them in another embarrassing situation.{{more}}

At last Thursday’s presentation ceremony at the Victoria Park, captain of the Bethel High School senior team Kimron Charles was named as the top goal scorer, with seven goals. However, on the announcement, Charles immediately indicated that he did not score seven goals, but six.

Many persons praised Charles for his honesty and his intervention in the faux pas.

A former national Under-16 and a current Under-20 footballer, Charles is the head boy at the Bethel High.

Master of Ceremonies Andrew Bramble reiterated that he was only reading from the information given to him, but promised it would be rectified.

SEARCHLIGHT understands that since then, three persons have been listed as the joint top goal scorers, all with six goals.

Charles, Kewon Clarke of the St Vincent Grammar School and Brad Richards of the Dr JP Eustace Memorial.

An intervention by SEARCHLIGHT avoided another embarrassment, as match officials had credited Richards with four goals in last Thursday’s finals versus the Bethel High, from which the Dr JP Eustace Memorial came away as six-nil winners.

If this had stood, it would have meant that both Charles and Richards would have shared the award, according to the organizers’ records.

In the final, Richards scored three items, two of which were penalties.

It was Bramble’s second apology for the evening, as he had announced the Bethel High School as winner of the Sylvester “Scobie” Taylor Shield, the symbol of the opening match, which features the two finalists in the senior division of the previous year’s tournament.

But unlike the scenario on the announcement of the most goals scored, the Bethel High’s representative, Malcolm Stewart, had already gone to the podium for the shield.

These faux pas have become part and parcel of schools’ sporting activities in recent times.(RT)
