Table Tennis team heads to CAC Games

St Vincent and the Grenadines will be represented in the sport of table tennis at the XXII Central American and Caribbean Games (CAC), set for Vera Cruz in Mexico, November 14-30.{{more}}

The players are Damien Dublin and Deighton King, as well as Kamal Hunte, who is based in Trinidad and Tobago. Also travelling with the team are Joseph Carrington – coach and Marlon Gibson – manager.

The trio of players got the berth to the Vera Cruz games after successfully navigating the qualification round, held in El Salvador in early September.

Public relations officer of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Table Tennis Association Sean Stanley explained to SEARCHLIGHT the focus of his organization.

“The Association is on a path of building champions, not necessarily local champions, but internationally; hence the focus is on the young and talented,” Stanley said.

“At this stage, it might be difficult the CAC team to win a medal, but good way of getting ahead …The players have been training for the past five months and no one would have expected them qualify for the Games…I am sure they would give a good account of themselves,” Stanley assured.

Apart from table tennis, St Vincent and the Grenadines will be represented at rugby, track and field, squash and taekwondo.

The multi-discipline games began in 1926 and have been documented as the oldest regional games, after the Summer Olympics.

St Vincent and the Grenadines first participated in the 1990 Games, held also in Mexico.(RT)
