Akeil De Roche catches local tennis eyes

Ten-year-old Akeil De Roche did not only pouch three titles and the coveted challenge trophy at the Vitamalt Junior Tennis tournament, but his display on and off the court gained the admiration of those who saw him.{{more}}

Anthony Boyea, speaking at the closing ceremony last Saturday afternoon at the National Tennis Centre at Villa, noted that apart from trying to defeat his opponents, “Akeil was enjoying his tennis.”

Boyea, a former president of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Tennis Association, projected that once De Roche continues along his present path, he has a long way to go in the sport.

Boyea also lauded the work of De Roche’s coach, Trevor Sam, for his progress.

A member of the Grassroot Tennis Club, De Roche, who has been playing tennis for the past four years, has had overseas experience in St Lucia and Antigua.

De Roche told SEARCHLIGHT that his favourite player is Roger Federer of Switzerland.

But while De Roche received most of the accolades and commendations, four others were identified by tournament director Boyea as the most improved players in their categories.

Copping the most improved player in the Under-10 category was Jayden Williams, with Briana Nash – the most improved among the Under-12’s.

Luke Browne was adjudged the most improved Under-16 player and Sebastian Cyrus – the most improved player in the Under-18 category.

Saturday’s closing ceremony also heard brief addresses from president of the SVGTA Miles Boyea and his first vice-president James Bascombe.

The ceremony was preceded by a competitive exhibition match between Shane Huggins and Fabrice George, both recipients of tennis scholarships.(RT)
