But the local organising committee of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Cycling Union is hopeful that the other territories of the sub-region, namely Montserrat, Dominica and St Kitts and Nevis, will honour the special occasion with their participation.

The championships are set for Sunday, August 24 from 11 a.m.

Slated for the Windward side of the mainland, the cyclists will traverse the circuit from Colonaire to Mt Grenan, to Georgetown.

They will make eight laps of the course, which when combined gives a distance of 70 miles.

And, host St Vincent and the Grenadines is hoping to put on a good show, both on and off the road.

Reports from the organising committee are that plans are being fine-tuned for the staging of the championships, and it is left to the competitors to provide the photo finishes for the Vincentian sporting public.

The committee has noted that apart from the title sponsor the National Lotteries Authority, other corporate bodies have saddled up with the SVG Cycling Union for the championships.

Among them are Premium Products, Mikes Screen Print, SVG Broadcasting, the News Newspaper, Sunset Shores Hotel, Cash Money Auto, Subway, Lewis Pharmacy and VC3.

Likewise, the local team is pulling out the stops to ensure that St Vincent and the Grenadines is on the podium at the end of the race.

Among those to fly the St Vincent and the Grenadines flag are Orano Andrews, Cammie Adams and veteran cyclist- Peter Durrant.

Andrews and Adams are currently in Scotland representing St Vincent and the Grenadines at the Commonwealth Games there. (RT)
