Rain denies SVG outright win in Windwards Under-19 Cricket Tourney

Host St Vincent and the Grenadines had to settle for first innings honours in a rain affected match in the opening round of the 2014 Windwards Under-19 Cricket Tournament, taking place here.{{more}}

The host was chasing 87 for an outright win at the Park Hill Playing Field, when a heavy shower stopped play.

At that time, St Vincent and the Grenadines was 56 for 1. Gidron Pope had hit 28 and Zianni Da Silva contributed 22 in the victory chase, with overcast skies looming.

The visitors had batted first and reached 117 all out in 47.4 overs; Brian Joseph hit 33 and Kyle Cabey, 31.

St Vincent and the Grenadines responded with 156. Shammon Hooper led the way with 51 and Gidron Pope 23.

Bowling for Dominica, Kharman Hamilton snared 6 for 51 and Alex Athanaze 3 for 35.

St Vincent and the Grenadines’ vice-captain Pope was again in the thick of things, as he snapped up 5 for 16; Romano Pierre took 3 for 30 and Kimson Dalzine, 2 for 11.

Behind by 39 runs, Dominica, batting a second time, made 125.

Kyle Cabey again was their lead batsman with 29 and Alex Athanaze 27, as Gidron Pope collected 4 for 45 and Othneil Lewis 3 for 13.

St Vincent and the Grenadines next play Grenada on Tuesday and Wednesday at Arnos Vale One, while Dominica and St Lucia battle at Arnos Vale Two.

The final round of matches are carded for this Friday and Saturday, when St Vincent and the Grenadines engage St Lucia at Arnos Vale One and Grenada face Dominica at Arnos Vale Two.
