Final Digicel local football pre-clinic kicks off tomorrow

The final local pre-clinic being held by the St Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation, in collaboration with Digicel, to choose young footballers that will this year take part in the 2014 Digicel Chelsea Kick Start football clinic will be held tomorrow, May 17, at the Grammar School playing field.{{more}}

The two other pre-clinics were held last Saturday, May 10, at Campden Park and at Calliaqua.

The selection committee comprises coaches who handle youth soccer in the country, including Wade Jackson, Keith “Mamadilla” Ollivierre, and Cornelius “Corney” Huggins.

Marketing executive at Digicel Danielle Cupid is urging young footballers to come out to the last pre-clinic tomorrow, as once chosen for the main clinic, “you would have the chance to train with the Chelsea coaches.”

Cupid stressed that the Digicel Chelsea Kick Start football clinic demonstrates Digicel’s ongoing commitment to the development of grassroots football.

She said that for the second consecutive year, 30 local young male foot-ballers between the ages of 14 and 16 are being given the opportunity to train with coaches from top English Premier League club Chelsea FC.

Of the 30 youngsters that will train with the Chelsea coaches, three will be chosen to journey to the Chelsea Academy in Barbados later this year (all expenses paid) where they will undergo an intense eight-day coaching clinic.

Footballers who are in the age group 14 to 16 and will not be 17 before October 2014 are asked to come out to the last clinic, tomorrow for a chance at being part of the main clinic, which will run from Monday, May 19 to Wednesday, May 21, 2014.

Twenty young female footballers have also been chosen to take part in a female clinic on Wednesday, May 21.

Last year, Deno John, Jowan Sawyers and Kyle Edwards earned themselves the week’s placing at the Digicel Chelsea Academy in Barbados.

John, who was voted Most Improved Player at the one-week training session in November last year, has since been recognized by the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus and once he maintains himself academically and keeps up his game, he will be given a scholarship to attend UWI.
