Vincentian Junior Squash players dominate 14th OECS Tournament

The 14th OECS Junior Squash Tournament was held from April 24 to 27 at the St Lucia Yacht Club. Some 32 players participated from OECS states BVI, St Lucia and St Vincent & the Grenadines.{{more}}

All categories were contested for regional titles in boys and girls from Under 11 through to Under 19 age groups. SVG had a contingent of 13 players who travelled with coach James Bentick and manager Dr Sherian Slater.

In the girls under 11 St Lucian Isabelle Segovia defeated Brianna Findlay of the BVI to secure the title, both appearing in their first tournament. Luca Reich of the BVI defeated Jlan McMaster of SVG 3-1 to take the boy’s title, with McMaster, competing in his first tournament, taking second place.

The rest of the categories saw a complete dominance of the Vincentian players. In the girls under 13, Giovanna Miller-Alexander defeated Segovia and Findlay 3-0 and secured the title by defeating Natalie Fay BVI 3-1.

Boys under 13 and 15 titles were won by 12-year- old Vincentian Kai Bentick, who played two categories, dismissing all nine opponents 3-0, without dropping a game. Vincentian Rashid Constance took 2nd spot in the under 13 and Leo Forte of the BVI took second in the under 15.

Boys under 17 and 19 saw another Vincentian dominance as 16-year-old Jason Doyle took both titles, as he defeated all his opponents 3-0 and also did not drop a game on his way to double titles. In the under 17 boys, 2nd place went to Geronimo Ross of SVG and Andre Segovia of St Lucia took the second spot for the under 19.

In the girls under 15 and 17 categories, Vincentian Thandi Myers also secured double titles, defeating all five opponents in her age group 3-1. In the higher age category she battled BVI player Kerstin Gardon narrowly winning 3-2, but easily defeated her other three opponents 3-0. In the under 15 girls second place went to BVI Emily Abierhart after a three-way tie between Vincentians Lauryn Doyle and Jada Ross was determined by points won. Deiriai Myers secured second place for the girls under 17.

The selection committee then named eight players to participate in the Junior Caribbean Squash tournament, scheduled for Bermuda, July 12 to 19: Vincentians Thandi Myers, Deiriai Myers, Jason Doyle and Kai Bentick, BVI players Kerstin Gardon, Abyomi Maddox, Leo Forte, and St Lucian Andre Segovia.

Team SVG’s participation was sponsored by the National Lotteries Authority.
