NCIL football championships reach business end

The business end has been sorted out in the 2014 senior men’s division of the Hairoun Beer National Inter-Community League Football Championships staged by the St Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation.{{more}}

It is now down to the last eight teams, as they seek to purse the big prize of $10 000, up for grabs for the winner.

But the eight first must get past the quarter-final stage, which is set for next Tuesday and Thursday at the Victoria Park.

The match-ups were determined following the completion of the second phase, which ended last Sunday.

The last eight see Group A winners Bank of St Vincent and the Grenadines Barrouallie facing the fourth placed team in Group B, Georgetown, from 5 p.m. on Thursday, with Group A second placed National Lotteries Authority Central Kingstown facing off with North Leeward, the third placed team in Group B, from 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Group B winner South Leeward, the lone unbeaten team in the championships, squares off with Layou, fourth place in Group A, next Tuesday from 5 p.m.

And, second placed team in Group B West Kingstown takes on third place in Group A, Sion Hill, next Thursday from 7 p.m.

The final placings were determined last weekend and it came down to the wire for North Leeward and Sion Hill.

North Leeward had to avoid defeat from Buccament, but made their passage easier with a three-nil defeat of their opponents. Goals from Jemuel Matthews, Kurtland Williams and Akeem Williams crossed North Leeward over the line.

Placed in a must win situation, Sion Hill had a harder route, but prevailed over Sea Operations Greiggs 3-2.

Sion Hill’s goals came from Delano Webb (16th minute), Whitney Williams (35th minute) and Rohan Thomas Jr. (53rd minute).

Greiggs’ items came from Raffique Mc Dowald’s penalty in the 22nd minute and Kenford Collins in the 39th minute.

South Leeward got past Georgetown two-nil, thanks to items from Tevin Slater and Nazir Mc Burnette in the fourth and 39th minutes respectively.

And, Bank of St Vincent and Grenadines Barrouallie rolled over arch rival Layou, four-nil.

Oalex Anderson netted twice and there was a goal each from Jomo Toppin and Chavel Cunningham.

The winner of the South Leeward/Layou encounter faces the winner of the match between Central Kingstown and North Leeward.

The other semi-final match-up sees the winner of the Barrouallie/ Georgetown rumble taking on the team which emerges victorious between Sion Hill and West Kingstown.

The semi-final matches will be played in two rounds on a “home and away” format, albeit at the Victoria Park.

These are set for Tuesday, April 21, and Thursday, April 23.

The semi-final winners meet in the championship match for the big purse.

Second place earns $6,000; the third place, $3,000 and the fourth place, $1,000.

The third place and final are slated to take place at the Victoria Park on Sunday, April 28. (RT)
