SVG’s volleyball taps into NORCECA’s resources

The St Vincent and the Grenadines Volleyball Association is once again maximizing the resources provided by the North America, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Federation (NORCECA).{{more}}

For the next two weeks, local volleyballers will be exposed to the expertise of Ramon Monchito- Hernandez, an itinerant coach assigned to the Easter Caribbean Volleyball Association, (ECVA), of which St Vincent and the Grenadines is a member.

Hernandez, who is on a three-week assignment here, spent the first week in familiarising himself with the local coaches and having sessions with the national outfits which are currently in training.

But from his observations, Hernandez thinks that greater emphasis must be paid on the technical and tactical side of the sport.

“There is good talent here, but they have to work on the technical and tactical part of the game… This has to be done through the national junior teams’ programme,” Hernandez pointed out.

Hernandez, a former assistant coach with the Puerto Rico national male team and head coach of the junior team, will be fine-tuning the national teams which are in preparations for upcoming ECVA tournaments.

The youth male and female teams head to Antigua and Barbuda next week, with the senior outfits slated for engagements in the next few months.

St Vincent and the Grenadines is part of the ECVA set-up, which is one of the four zones within NORCECA.

Also part of the EVCA grouping are Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Dutch St Martin, French St Martin, Grenada, Montserrat, Saba, St Eustatius, St Kitts and Nevis and St Lucia.

ECVA owes much of its sustenance to NORCECA, which in the last year, through financial investments, fuelled the Development Plan which totalled over US$270,000.

The investments covered the areas of sport equipment distribution, assistance to the youth and junior programs, participation in beach volley tournaments, seminars and courses for coaches, referees and physical education teachers.

Additionally, NORCECA investments in FIVB World Championship Qualification Tournaments to ECVA has totalled US$ 196,143. (RT)
