Teams pursue title honours in National U-13 Football Competition

Two-time consecutive champions of the National Inter-Community League Under-13 Football competition, Layou, will be challenged by several others as they all quest for the 2014 honours.{{more}}

The journey to unseat Layou, who won the inaugural title in 2012 and did a repeat last year, began last Saturday morning at the Grammar School Playing Field.

Among those chasing down Layou are East Kingstown, Barrouallie, South Leeward, North Leeward, Buccament, West Kingstown, Central Kingstown, Bequia, Greiggs, Marriaqua, Stubbs, Georgetown and North Windward.

It is expected that at least two other community-based teams will join the fray.

The Under-13 development competition is viewed by technical director of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation Keith Ollivierre as the bedrock for future national teams and programmes.

“The purpose of the Under-13 competition is basically to evaluate the work that was done in the different Grassroot areas around the country…. It also gives us an opportunity to select the most promising kids to start the process for the National U-15 team as we look ahead to 2015,” Ollivierre told SEARCHLIGHT.

Reports are that the competition will take place mainly on Saturdays, with the short vacation for schools also utilized to facilitate matches. (RT)
