Annual Bequia track and field meet dubbed best in years

This week, College Voices correspondent Sayie Ollivierre journeyed to her home island of Bequia, where she covered the island’s annual track and field meet.{{more}}

The Bequia Rotary Club’s 16th National Heroes Day athletics championships, sponsored by the National Lotteries Authority, took place at the Clive Tannis Playing Field on Thursday, March 13.

The event saw participation from schools such as the Bequia Community High School, the Bequia Seventh Day Adventist Secondary, Paget Farm Government, the Bequia Anglican Primary, Paradise Primary and the Bequia Seventh-Day Adventist Primary.

The day’s activities consisted of 82 events and included competition from under seven to under-19.

Commended for their outstanding performances were Akil Peters, Xandreou Douglas and Gabriella Ollivierre.

The Clive Tannis Playing Field saw one of the largest turnouts of spectators in recent times, with parents, teachers, students and other onlookers showing their support for the athletes.

The championship meet was described as the best in years, with the crowd in constant uproar at the races and the adrenaline sparked as the Paget Farm Government School and the Bequia Anglican Primary School battled in most of the races.

Clayton Ollivierre, president of the Bequia Rotary Club, also commended the Bequia Seventh-Day Adventist Primary for participating after an absence of approximately 10 years and was thankful for their return.

He also said: “The day’s event was a success; it was incident free and it went down smoothly.”

The club also thanked all those who contributed to the success of the event, including Allan’s Bakery, Bequia Venture, Bequia Express and Knights Trading Ltd, as well as all who took time out to come and support the athletes.
