School cricketers rewarded with trophies and prizes

Those who were a cut above the rest in the 2014 edition of the United Insurance Secondary Schools’ Cricket Competition, received the recompense for their achievements last Friday, when the lid was placed on this year’s version.{{more}}

St Vincent and the Grenadines and Windwards Under-19 player Gidron Pope was the batsman with the highest aggregate – 428 runs. Pope, a left-handed batsman, also scored the first double century in the history of the competition, when he lashed 248 against the St Joseph’s Convent, Marriaqua.

Pope had an added accolade – the best all-rounder, as he scalped 11 wickets to go with his fluent run scoring. He collected a trophy for each of his accolades, also a pair of cricket shoes from Courtesy Sports, and a cash award, thanks to the benevolence of Kentish Jacobs.

Pope’s teammate Dellorn Douglas who last year played for St Vincent and the Grenadines and for the Windwards at Under-15, was adjudged the competition’s Best Wicketkeeper.

Douglas, the son of former St Vincent and the Grenadines and Windwards leg spinner Olanzo Jackson, received a pair of wicketkeeping gloves from Courtesy Sports and a trophy.

The Player of the Final, Denson Hoyte from the Sandy Bay Secondary, in addition to his trophy, got a pair of batting pads.

The two other individual awards were also pouched by Sandy Bay Secondary’s students.

The duo of Kurtney Pompey and Iran Pompey were the Top Wicket-taker and and Player with the Most Catches, respectively.

During the competition, Kurtney collected 21 wickets, while Iran gulped up two catches in last Friday’s final at the Park Hill Playing Field.

Sandy Bay, who played unbeaten in the competition, won Zone A, while the Zone B of the preliminary round of the competition was won by Petit Bordel and Zone C – the West St George Secondary. (RT)
