Maple Club to debut at World Golden Oldies Netball Festival

Maple Club will make its debut at the World Golden Oldies Netball Festival to be staged in San Diego, California from October 6 to 13.{{more}}

However, two of the players making the trip, Thelma Foster and Joan Foster-Baynes, were part of Vets Sports Club’s sojourn to the event in Hawaii in 2000.

Most of the nine-member Maple team are set to leave here this Friday, October 4, for the USA, where they will contest the serious category (category two) of the festival.

Among them is ace goal shooter Skiddy Francis Crick, who still leads her team in the circle in local netball competitions.

She was instrumental in Maple copping both the league and knock out competitions in Division One of the 2013 LIME National Club Tournament.

Foster-Baynes is the team’s coach, while Peggy Ince-Hull is the team’s manager.

Ince-Hull told SEARCHLIGHT that each player funded her own participation in the festival, which she said, demonstrates their determination to be part of the event.

Maple, which is said to be the oldest netball club in the Eastern Caribbean, is among 68 teams which are participating in the one-week festival, the 15th bi-annual edition.

Vets Sports Club, another Vincentian club, is also among the participating teams.

The Golden Oldies World Netball Festival is about the ethos of Fun, Friendship and Fraternity, and is a collaborative effort through Netball America, San Diego United Netball Club, and the San Diego Sports Commission, in partnership with Vintage Sports and Leisure (VSL) events.(RT)
