Allan makes mark on ECVA Junior Women’s Tournament

Captain of the St Vincent and the Grenadines team to the just concluded Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association (ECVA) Junior Women’s Tournament, Angelique Allan, has made her mark on the event.{{more}}

Allan copped the Best Digger award when the tournament closed off last Friday night at the Beausejour Indoor Facility in St Lucia.

Allan led her team to third place in the tournament, behind St Lucia and Antigua and Barbuda.

St Vincent and the Grenadines beat French St Martin in both the preliminary round and in the third place play-off, while losing to Antigua and Barbuda and St Lucia.

In their first outing, St Vincent and the Grenadines was distanced by St Lucia 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-8).

St Vincent and the Grenadines was one point away from reaching the final, but suffered a heart breaking 3-2 loss to Antigua and Barbuda.

After St Vincent and the Grenadines had taken the first two sets, 25-15, 25-19, Antigua and Barbuda replied in the third and fourth with wins of 25-19 and 25-12.

And, in the decisive fifth set, Antigua and Barbuda trumped 16-14 in a nervy run-in, as both teams traded points throughout the period.

St Vincent and the Grenadines then recorded a straight set win over French St Martin 25-15, 25-22, and 25-14.

In the third place play- off, St Vincent and the Grenadines had to come from two sets down to overcome French St Martin.

St Vincent and the Grenadines lost the first two sets at 16-25 and 24-26, but rebounded to win the third 25-22, the fourth at 25-19 and the fifth at 15-3.

St Lucia won all four matches, including a 3-0 dumping of French St Martin and 3-1 margins at the expense of Antigua and Barbuda in both the preliminary round and in the championship match.

The tournament win sees St Lucia heading to the continental cup in 2014.

Assessing his team’s effort throughout the two days of the tournament, coach of the St Vincent and the Grenadines team Eardley Martin contended that they played well in patches.

Looking to the next tournament in two years’ time, Martin revealed that he and the technical staff of his association will have to recruit some young players, as the bulk of the current squad is ineligible for the next tournament. (RT)
