WISG netball, football titles back in Vincentians’ locker

The netball and football titles of the annual Windward Islands Schools’ Games are back in the grasp of St Vincent and the Grenadines.{{more}}

Once, it was almost a surety since the games were revived just over a decade ago; however, in recent times, they have come at a premium.

When the 2013 edition of the annual games concluded here last Saturday, these were the only two disciplines in which the Vincentians trumped, and both represented significant reversals in fortune.

When the games were hosted in Grenada in 2012, St Vincent and the Grenadines had the ignominy of placing last among the four islands in netball, a position which was a rarity.

But this time around, the Vincentians pulled out all the stops to play unbeaten, albeit not by convincing margins.

St Vincent and the Grenadines recorded a 53-27 triumph over Dominica, but slimly defeated Grenada 39-38 and got past St Lucia 33-31.

In the case of football, St Vincent and the Grenadines improved from their third position last year, to play unbeaten, and more so, did not concede a goal.

After drawing 0-0 with St Lucia, the Vincentians returned to register a 2-nil whipping on Grenada, before lacing Dominica 3-0.

Meanwhile, St Vincent and the Grenadines also showed improved placing in female basketball, docking in second, after almost patenting the last place for several years.

The local lasses overcame Dominica 69-22, and St Lucia 52-8, but were beaten by Grenada 50-40.

But that was not the case with their male counterparts, who again maintained the cellar position.

The Vincentian males were beaten by Dominica 73-52; lost to Grenada 104-37 and were defeated by St Lucia 72-59.

On the other hand, St Vincent and the Grenadines, who had claimed the female volleyball title three years in a row, from 2010 to 2012,failed to win a match in this year’s outing, losing to Dominica 3-2, and 3-0 to St Lucia and Grenada respectively.

And, there were two individuals who were once again this country’s most valuable player in their disciplines.

Delonie Sam, for the second year in succession, was voted the most valuable player in Netball. Sam though added another when she was also adjudged the same in female basketball.

Jahmal Small copped the most valuable player in male volleyball, a feat he attained in Grenada in 2012.

Grenada claimed the 2013 edition; St Lucia was second, St Vincent and the Grenadines third and Dominica fourth.

St Lucia will host the games in 2014. (RT)
