North Leeward to launch female cricket team

As part of efforts to revive female cricket in the North Leeward constituency, a young and talented team has been put together.{{more}}

The team, called Future Starlets, will be launched to the public tomorrow, Saturday, April 6, at a ceremony to be held at the Troumaca Primary school.

Hugh Wyllie, the man assisting with the team’s management told SEARCHLIGHT that the team is comprised of players ages 15 to 30.

Future Starlets is made up of “young and talented players,” such as Shanique Providence, who, according to Wyllie, “is fit to be captain of the team.”

Other players include Jozell Cyrus and the most senior member of the squad is Paula Jones, who has played at the national level.

Wyllie explained that at present, the team is made up of 12 cricketers, but the objective is to increase those numbers.

He said registration forms are available for interested players to join the Future Starlets.

“Most of the players on the team are from Troumaca, but we don’t want it to be just a Troumaca team. So that’s why we have distributed registration forms throughout the constituency, so that other neighbouring communities can join,” he added.

The opening ceremony will feature addresses by former West Indies Test cricketer Michael Findlay, President of the St Vincent Cricket Association Julian Jack and Julius Anthony, President of the North Leeward Sport Association.

Osalome Robertson, age 90, said to be the oldest female cricketer from the area, will also be presented with an award for her contribution to the development of the sport.

The goal now will be to have continuous training sessions for the players, Wyllie said, in preparation for them to enter local and regional competitions in the near future.

“Right now, female cricket is a big thing, because the West Indies team is doing well and we think we have potential for local players to make it to the national level then on the West Indies team,” he said. (AA)
