St Vincent top four squash players test their might against Barbados top three

St Vincent’s top four squash players tested their skills against the top three squash players from Barbados on Friday and Saturday. {{more}}The much anticipated event was another in the series of training for selection to the team representing St Vincent and the Grenadines at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland.

On Day 1 SVG defeated Barbados 4-2.

SVG National U19 Champion Kevin Hannaway defeated Caribbean #6 Gavin Cumberbatch 3-2 (11/13,7/11,11/8,11/4,11/8) and defeated Rhett Cumberbatch 3-0 (11/6,11/0,12/10).

SVG National and Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States over 40 Champion 2012 James Bentick lost his first match to Rhett Cumberbatch 0-3 (11/2,11/7,11/8), but reversed the result against Gavin Cumberbatch winning 3-0 (11/7,11/9,11/9).

SVG National U15 Champion lost to Caribbean #5 Shawn Simpson 0-3 (11/3, 11/9, 11/6). SVG Kevin Bailey later stopped Shawn Simpson in a very exciting match, winning 3-1 (4/11,11/3,13/11,11/7).

The overall result on Day 1 was SVG 4, Barbados 2. Spectators witnessed some exciting matches, with players from both countries exhibiting a high standard of play.

On Day 2, the Barbadians turned the tables on SVG winning 4-2.

SVG Kevin Bailey opened the day with an exciting win over Rhett Cumberbatch 3-2 (7/11, 11/7, 11/8,6/11,11/7). He continued his winning ways later in the afternoon with another win over Gavin Cumberbatch 3-0 (11/2, 11/6, 11/5). Kevin was the only player from SVG to win on Day 2.

Jason Doyle lost to Gavin Cumberbatch 0-3 (6/11,9/11,11/13) and to Rhett Cumberbatch 0-3 (10/12,5/11,2/11). Kevin Hannaway lost to Shawn Simpson 1-3 (11/9, 9/11, 7/11, 9/11); so did James Bentick 1-3 (14/12,8/11,5/11,6/11).

At the end of the two-day event the scores were tied as both teams won six matches each. Following the matches, the visitors were presented with tokens of appreciation and expressions of thanks were exchanged. It was decided that a return event would be held next year. SVG Squash Association is confident that this event marks the beginning of well-warranted exchanges between Caribbean Squash Players who currently meet only once a year.

SVG Squash Association sincerely thanks the National Olympic Committee for its kind sponsorship.
