Sports official to bid for truce among coaches

Sports administrator Woodrow “Killy” Williams is helping to heal the festering wounds among some of the track and field coaches here.{{more}}

Williams made this pronouncement Saturday night as he addressed the issue on NBC Radio’s “Let’s Talk Sports”.

Williams said he was saddened by the stance taken by some of the coaches, which, he said, is only hurting the sport.

Williams was one of the two moderators on the programme.

He said he will lead in trying to get the coaches’ association going again and will get the machinery going on his return from Puerto Rico, where he is due to attend a refresher course.

Williams, a sports officer within the Department of Physical Education and Sports, also said the coaches should share their knowledge with one another, instead of the current stand -off.

And, Williams is leading by example, as he is lending his expertise daily to Thomas Saunders Secondary School students.

Williams, a specialist in field events, is working with athletes of the school who are competent at the triple jump.

Williams, who is a technical official at the annual Junior Carifta Games, further expressed his concerns last Tuesday to SEARCHLIGHT.

“It hurts me to see at CARIFTA, there is hardly ever a Vincentian in the final,” he said.

He said this country last won a gold medal 23 years ago — the female Under-17 200m.

Further, the country’s last medal at the Junior Carifta Track and Field championships was in 2009 in St Lucia, when Delhonni Samuel-Nicol won silver in the male Under-20 5,000m.

Williams said he hoped that with the efforts of all concerned, including the warring coaches, things can be reversed in the shortest possible time. (RT)
