Call to support local U-20 footballers

Vincentians have been urged to support this country’s Under-20 football team in their endeavour to go further in the Caribbean Football Union’s (CFU) qualifiers of the 2013 World Cup.{{more}}

The CFU Group IV will be staged here at the Victoria Park from tomorrow, Wednesday, as Guyana, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago join the host team, St Vincent and the Grenadines, in a quest for the two places for the next phase of the competition.

Making the plea for support was committee member of the executive of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation, Dwight Roberts, as he addressed a press conference last Thursday, at the Federation’s office at Bentinck Square.

“We are urging everyone to come out and support the youngsters; we have some exciting youngsters that will be on show,” Roberts noted.

A large chunk of the local team is made up of players who recently placed third in the CBN/ Super Six Windward Islands Schools Games in Grenada.

The SVGFF committee member said that it will not be all football on the three days of competition.

“The public can look out for something special when the games are being played. We will have a lot of giveaways,” Roberts disclosed.

Roberts said that the executive of the SVGFF has partnered with a local promoter We Ting Promotions and telecommunications provider Digicel in adding the attractions to the days’ matches.

It was also disclosed at last Thursday’s briefing that the CFU has given the SVGFF US$25,000, towards the cost of hosting the group.

In the opening salvos, St Vincent and the Grenadines, being coached by former national striker, Alexander “Pete” Morris, meets Suriname in the second match of the double header, set to begin at 7:30 p.m., with Trinidad and Tobago facing Guyana in the first encounter, from 5:30.

On Friday, Trinidad and Tobago faces Suriname in the first match of the evening, from 5:30, with the Diandrous Williams-led St Vincent and the Grenadines meeting Guyana in the second match from 7:30.

Group IV will be completed on Sunday when Guyana and Suriname face off from 5:30 p.m., then St Vincent and the Grenadines opposes Trinidad and Tobago from 7:30 p.m.

The CONCACAF Under-20 championships will take place in Mexico from February 18 to March 2, 2013, and will serve as the qualification tournament for the FIFA Under-20 World Cup 2013.

The top four teams from the CONCACAF Zone will qualify for the 2013 FIFA Under-20 World Cup finals, set for Turkey. (RT)
