Phillips takes SVG’s MVP

Renecia Phillips copped St Vincent and the Grenadines’ Most Valuable Player award, when the individual prizes were dished out last Thursday evening, at the conclusion of the 13th Jean Pierre Caribbean Netball Association (CNA) Under-16 Netball Tournament,{{more}} which was staged at the Arnos Vale Netball Complex, here in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Phillips, a 16-year-old student of the Buccament Bay Secondary School, who was participating in her second and final tournament in this age-group, was the Vincentians’ stand out player, despite sustaining a leg injury, which prevented her from completing the latter matches.

She had to resort to crutches to aid her mobility.

The other Most Valuable Player awardees were: Kay Joseph – Antigua and Barbuda; Shaquina Thomas – Barbados; Kyla Winston – Dominica; Jomela Billy – Grenada; Lisa Casimir – St Lucia and Kadejah Coltes -Trinidad and Tobago.

Shonica Watson of Barbados was the top shooter in the tournament with an accuracy of 83.96%

In the Shooting Competition, Watson had the highest individual score, 48 of her 71 attempts, to record a 67.61% accuracy.

But it was Trinidad and Tobago’s Safiya Fortune who was the Most Accurate Shooter in the Shooting Competition, with 79..66 %.

Each player from the seven participating teams was presented with a certificate of participation.

Barbadian player Tia Jones, who is also a national junior volleyball player, shared the Young Achievers Award for excellence in academics and sports with Khadejah Coltes of Trinidad and Tobago.

Kayla Winston of Dominica was the youngest player in the tournament, edging out the other 13-year-olds who were in line for the award.

The nine umpires, as well as the two assessors, were presented with tokens of appreciation. (RT)
