Kwan wants to be number one

Kwan Stewart, one of the country’s rising Track and Field athletes, wants ultimately to become a professional athlete, but understands that he has to do so in steps.{{more}}

Stewart, a 12-year-old second form student of the St Vincent Grammar School, has begun to climb the ladder of success, in getting to his goal.

At his school’s Track and Field Championships last month, Stewart was the Junior Champion, helping Reeves House to lift the title.

On his way to the divisional title, Stewart won the 100 m, 200 m, High Jump and the Discus events.

The soft-spoken Stewart is no stranger to success and accolades, as he won gold in the 60 m 11-12 years age group, at the Central American and Caribbean age group championships, held in Tortola last year.

This feat earned him the 2011 Team Athletics SVG’s award for the Most Promising Athlete.

Stewart said his interest in Track and Field was honed while he was a student of the Kingstown Preparatory School, where Physical Education teacher Ian Sardine gave him every opportunity to develop.

An admirer of the world’s fastest man, Jamaican Usain Bolt, as well as his father, Watson Stewart, Kwan’s next goal is to be crowned the Junior Champion at the 2012 Inter Secondary Schools’ Track and Field Championships, set for March 29, at the Arnos Vale One Playing Field.

“I expect to be Junior Champion, winning the gold in the 100, 200, High Jump and Discus,” Stewart told SEARCHLIGHT last Friday afternoon.

At present, Stewart works out regularly with his school team in preparation for the schools’ major Track and Field event.

Additionally, Stewart trains twice per week with Coach Michael Ollivierre.

Stewart, another one to watch for at the 2012 Inter Schools championships, said despite having to fulfill his training regimen, he is able to balance it well with his academics.(RT)
