Squash Association elects new Executive

Dr. Sherian Slater has been returned as President of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Squash Association.{{more}}

She was re-elected when the association held its Annual General Meeting last Monday at the National Lotteries Authority building at Paul’s Avenue.

The new Vice President is Dr. Simone France, replacing Anne Miller. Deidre Myers retained the position of Secretary. Tessa King takes over the post as the association’s Treasurer, from her previous post of Assistant Treasurer. Janice Glasgow was the previous Treasurer.

The new Public Relations Officer is Anne Miller, replacing Janine Doyle. Janine Doyle now holds the post of Assistant Public Relations Officer.

The new Committee members are Rochelle Ollivierre and Allison Sutherland. Bradley Glasgow remains the Junior representative on the Executive.

Slater told SEARCHLIGHT soon after her re-election that although she was hoping that she would have been replaced, she will be working towards getting the local game stronger.

“Because this year, we are not hosting any of the major tournaments, we will be having our first Junior Open in March and have already secured sponsorship from SVG General Limited and expect juniors from the region to come over,” Slater projected.

Also on the cards for the new Executive is a Masters Tournament as well as a Firms Tournament.

Looking back on the past year, Slater said: “Last year was a tremendous year for Squash, following on the heels of the previous year.”

Slater singled out the OECS winning the men’s title of the Caribbean Championships in the Cayman Islands as a significant milestone in the sub region.

Slater was basing the success of the OECS five member winning outfit, which contained three Vincentians.

“We are hoping this year, though, that our Juniors will be able to train harder and bring more Caribbean success,” Slater said.

She said in ensuring the growth of the youngsters here, the association has embarked on seeking out new and emerging talents, by undertaking a free session for those with the promise.

Slater said her association was thankful to the Ministry of National Mobilisation, Youth, Sports etc., which has provided some financial assistance to their resident coach James Bentick in carrying forward the association’s development programme.(RT)
