Mohammed sets up West Indies Women’s win

Off-spinner Anisa Mohammed bagged the best figures, that of seven wickets for 14 runs off 8.3 overs, as she helped the West Indies women’s regional side to defeat Pakistan Women by 130 runs{{more}} in the Final of the International Cricket Council’s Women’s World Cup 2013 qualification tournament last Saturday in Bangladesh.

Mohammed’s last five wickets came for just four runs, as Pakistan folded with 120 off 37.3 overs.

The 23-year-old Trinidadian’s exploits came after the West Indies had posted 250 for 5 off their 50 overs, at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.

Mohammed, who was named Player of the Match, had the foundation laid for her, as earlier in the match, power-hitter Deandra Dottin crashed 95 off 84 balls. Dottin’s innings was dotted with seven sixes, which was a West Indies record.

Vincentian Juliana Nero made 63 off 98 balls at the top of the order, with Stafanie Taylor making 32.

The West Indies played unbeaten in the tournament, as they beat Ireland by 203 runs Bangladesh by 80 runs, recorded a ten-wicket triumph over Japan and defeated Pakistan by eight wickets in the preliminary round.

In the semi-finals, the West Indies humbled Sri Lanka by 58 runs.

With the victory West Indies moved up to Number five in the International Cricket Council’s One-Day International Team Rankings.

ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year Stafanie Taylor was named Player of the Tournament. Taylor was the highest run-scorer in the tournament after the 20-year-old from Jamaica amassed 325 runs at an average of 81.25; she also claimed 10 wickets at an average of 9.30.
